How to Shut Down Windows 8 (Full Shutdown and Normal Hybrid Shutdown) Windows 8 presents many problems for the user (both new and experienced). Among the first issues. I don't how many times I've needed to reboot a machine while accessing it over Remote Desktop. I usually just open a command prompt and type shutdown -t 0 -r to reboot. These tips will tell you how you can make Windows 10 faster. Using these tips, you can make Windows PC startup faster, and run & shutdown faster too. Actually, this. How to Shut Down Windows Faster. This guide will make your computer shut down faster. Go to Start and click on run. Users who have started using Windows 8 struggle finding options to Shutdown, Restart, Sleep and Shutdown their PCs. From Windows 95 to Windows 7, the Power. Benchmarked: Ubuntu vs Vista vs Windows 7. In depth: A lot of people have been chattering about the improvements Windows 7 brings for Windows users, but how does it compare to Ubuntu in real- world tests? We put Ubuntu 8. 1. Windows Vista and Windows 7 through their paces in both 3. Latest trending topics being covered on ZDNet including Reviews, Tech Industry, Security, Hardware, Apple, and Windows. Hibernate vs. Shut-Down There are many ways to shut down and restart your computer, but - which does what, and which should you use when? The answer depends. Ubuntu faces the new contender. And, just for luck, we threw in a few tests using Jaunty Jackalope with ext. When Windows users say that Windows 7 is easier to install than ever, what do they really mean? When they say it's faster, is it just in their heads, or is Microsoft really making big strides forward? And, perhaps most importantly, when Linux benchmarkers show us how screamingly fast ext. These are the questions we wanted to answer, so we asked Dell to provide us with a high- spec machine to give all the operating systems room to perform to their max. Our test machine packed an Intel Core i. GHz with hyperthreading and 8. MB of L3 cache. It also had 6. GB of RAM, plus two 5. GB of hard drives with 1. MB of cache. The tests we wanted to perform for each operating system were: How long does each operating system take to install? How much disk space was used in the standard install? How long does boot up and shutdown take? How long does it take to copy files from USB to HD, and from HD to HD? How fast can it execute the Richards benchmark? We also, just for the heck of it, kept track of how many mouse clicks it took to install each OS. Before we jump into the results, there are a few things we should make clear: To ensure absolute fairness, install time was measured from the moment the computer was turned on until we reached a working desktop. The same computer hardware was used for all tests, and all operating systems were installed fresh for this article. We used the Ultimate versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, simply because Windows 7 was provided only in this flavour. We used the Windows Vista SP1 disk to accurately reflect what users are likely to experience todaay.
Our Windows 7 version is the open beta that Microsoft issued recently. It is probable Windows 7 will be at least this fast in the final build, if not faster. For Ubuntu 9. 0. 4 we used the daily build from January 2. All operating systems were installed using standard options; nothing was changed. After checking how much space was used during the initial install, each operating system was updated with all available patches before any other tests were performed. Our journalistic friends have informed us that Windows Vista (and, presumably, Windows 7 too) has technology to increase the speed of the system over time as it learns to cache programs intelligently. It also allows users to use flash drives to act as temporary storage to boost speed further. None of our tests are likely to show this technology in action, so please take that into account when reading the results. The filesystem, boot, shutdown and Richards benchmarks were performed three times each then averaged. And, of course, there's the most important proviso of all: it is very, very likely that a few tweaks to any of these operating systems could have made a big difference to these results, but we're not too interested in that - these results reflect what you get you install a plain vanilla OS, like most users do. Install time. Amount of time taken to install, from machine being turned on to working desktop. Measured in seconds; less is better. At first glance, you might think that Ubuntu clearly installs far faster than either version of Windows, and while that's true there is one important mitigation: both Windows Vista and Windows 7 run system benchmarks part- way through the installation to determine the computer's capabilities. A bit of a flippant one - just how many mouse clicks does it take to install an OS with the default options? Surprisingly, Ubuntu 8. Windows 7. NB: hopefully it's clear this doesn't make Ubuntu 8. Measured in, er, mouse clicks; fewer is better. Disk space used immediately after a fresh install. Measured in gigabytes; less is better. While some people might complain that we used the Ultimate editions of both Vista and Windows 7, they probably forget that the standard Ubuntu includes software such as an office suite as standard. NB: Vista failed to detect the network card during install, leaving us without an internet connection until a driver was downloaded on another computer. Bootup and shutdown. Boot up time was also measured from the moment the machine was turned on, and the timer was stopped as soon as the desktop was reached. The Dell box does take about 2. POST, but to avoid questions about when to start the timer we just started it as soon as the power button was pressed. Amount of time taken to boot, from machine being turned on to working desktop. Measured in seconds; less is better. The 3. 2- bit version of Windows 7 is the only one to beat the one- minute mark, but that advantage is quickly lost in the switch to 6. Linux has always been rather slow to boot, but as we understand it reducing boot time is one of the goals of the Ubuntu 9. Amount of time taken to shutdown, from button being clicked to machine powering off. Measured in seconds; less is better. Windows lags a little behind the Linuxes, with 6. Windows Vista. IO testing. To test filesystem performance, we ran four tests: copying large files from USB to HD, copying large files from HD to HD, copying small files from USB to HD, and copying small files from HD to HD. The HD to HD tests copied data from one part of the disk to another as opposed to copying to a different disk. For reference, the large file test comprised 3. MB in total; the small file test comprised 2,1. MB in total. Each of these tests were done with write caching disabled to ensure the full write had taken place. Amount of time taken to copy the small files from a USB flash drive to hard disk. Measured in seconds; less is better. Amount of time taken to copy the small files from one place to another on a single hard disk. Measured in seconds; less is better. Let us take this opportunity to remind readers that Windows 7 is still at least nine months from release. Amount of time taken to copy the large files from a USB flash drive to hard disk. Measured in seconds; less is better. Amount of time taken to copy the large files from one place to another on a single hard disk. Measured in seconds; less is better. With the exception of Windows 7 while copying larges files around a hard drive, Windows generally suffered compared to Linux in all of these tests. Obviously Windows does have to worry about some things that Linux doesn't, namely DRM checks, but these figures show a drastic performance difference between the two. Notes: Vista and Windows 7 really seemed to struggle with copying lots of small files, but clearly it's something more than a dodgy driver because some of the large- file speeds are incredible in Windows 7. Both Vista and Windows 7 seemed to introduce random delays when deleting files. For example, about one in three times when deleting the files from our filesystem benchmark, this screen below would appear and do nothing for 2. However, this wasn't part of our benchmark, so isn't included in the numbers above. This was very annoying. Richards benchmark. Notes: This was done using the cross- platform Python port of Richards. For reference, Ubuntu 8. Python 2. 5. 2, Ubuntu 9. Python 2. 5. 4, and we used Python 2. Windows tests. Even though the 6. Linux and Windows don't look that far apart, we have to admit to being very impressed with the Windows tests - the deviation between tests was just 3ms on Vista, and 5ms on Windows 7, compared to 2. Linux. Amount of time taken to execute the Python Richards benchmark. Measured in milliseconds; less is better. It's clear from that graph that having a 6. OS can make a real difference in compute- intensive tasks, but it's not too pleasing to see Windows pip Linux to the post in nearly all results. Switching to ext. All the Linux benchmarks above were done using ext. Well, not a lot. Boot, shutdown and filesystem tests for Ubuntu 9. Measured in seconds; less is better. Although there's no difference in shutdown speed, the boot time using ext. We can probably discount the the USB to HD tests simply out of error margin, which leaves the HD to HD tests, and there we find a very healthy boost: 3. Our tests also showed an improvement in the large file test, but it's not as marked. Conclusions. Benchmarks are always plagued with questions, uncertainties, error margins and other complexities, which is why we're not going to try to look too deeply into these figures. Obviously we're Linux users ourselves, but our tests have shown that there are some places where Windows 7 really is making some improvement and that's good for competition in the long term. However, Linux isn't sitting still: with ext. Sadly it looks like Ubuntu 9. Linux boxes will either have to fiddle with the default options, have patience, or jump ship to Fedora - which will be switching to ext. You should follow us on Identi. How to Allow Pings (ICMP Echo Requests) Through Your Windows Firewall. When Windows Firewall is enabled with default settings, you can’t use the ping command from another device to see if your PC is alive. Here’s how to change that. The ping command works by sending special packets known as Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Requests to a target device, and then waiting for that device to send back an ICMP Echo Reply packet. This not only lets you test whether a network- connected device is active, but it also measures the response time and displays that for you, as well. By default, Windows Firewall with Advanced Security blocks ICMP Echo Requests from the network. Sure, you could take the drastic step of disabling the firewall for testing purposes, but a simpler solution is just to create an exception that allows ICMP requests through the firewall. We’re going to show you how to do that both from the Command Prompt and the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security interface. The instructions in this article should work for Windows 7, 8, and 1. We’ll point out where there are any major differences. Warning: Creating exceptions and opening ports through your firewall does open up security risks. Allowing ping requests isn’t too big a deal, but it’s usually best to block anything you don’t need. Edit Article wiki How to Turn on Windows Firewall. The following post shows detailed steps to enable and disable the Server Message Block (SMB) versions SMBv1, SMBv2 & SMBv3 on the SMB server and SMB client. Allow Ping Requests by Using the Command Prompt. The fastest way to create an exception for ping requests is with the Command Prompt. You’ll need to open it with admin privileges. To do so in Windows 8 and 1. Windows+X and then select “Command Prompt (Admin).” In Windows 7, hit Start and type “command prompt.” Right- click the resulting entry and choose “Run as Administrator.”To enable ping requests, you’re going to create two exceptions to allow traffic through the firewall—one for ICMPv. ICMPv. 6 requests. To create the ICMPv. Enter: netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=. Now, if you ping your PC from a remote device, you should get an actual result. To disable ping requests again, you’ll need to disable both exceptions you created. Here's how to disable Windows error reporting. Disable error reporting to stop Windows from sending information to Microsoft about errors on your computer.Microsoft KB 307874 describes how to disable Windows XP Professional’s simple file sharing. You might have heard about IPv6, it is the latest address protocol that will eventually replace IPv4. From Windows Vista onward it has been kept enabled by default. Description: On Microsoft Windows operating systems, a Windows service is a long-running executable that performs specific functions and it is designed not to require. For the ICMPv. 4 exception, type (or copy and paste) this command at the prompt and hit Enter: netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=. However, when you go to disable a rule, you’ll want to use the same rule name as when you created it. If you forget the name of the rule, you can use the Command Prompt to see a list of all rules. Just type the following command and hit Enter: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule name=all. You’ll see lots of rules listed, but scroll back up to the top of the list and you should see any rules you’ve created right at the top. Allow Ping Requests by Using Windows Firewall With Advanced Security. While the Command Prompt is the quickest way to add an exception to your firewall for ping requests, you can also do this in the graphic interface using the “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” app. Hit Start, type “windows firewall with,” and then launch “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.”You’re going to create two new rules—one for allowing ICMPv. ICMPv. 6 requests. In the left pane, right- click “Inbound Rules” and choose “New Rule.”In the “New Inbound Rule Wizard” window, select “Custom” and then click “Next.”On the next page, make sure “All programs” is selected and then click “Next.”On the next page, choose “ICMPv. Protocol type” dropdown and then click the “Customize” button. In the “Customize ICMP Settings” window, select the “Specific ICMP types” option. In the list of ICMP types, enable “Echo Request” and then click “OK.”Back in the “New Inbound Rule Wizard” window, you’re ready to click “Next.”On the next page, it’s easiest to just make sure that the “Any IP address” options are selected for both local and remote IP addresses. If you want, you can configure specific IP addresses to which your PC will respond to a ping request. Other ping requests are ignored. This lets you narrow things down a bit so that only certain devices will be able to ping your PC. You can also configure separate lists of approved IP addresses for your local and remote (Internet) networks. However you set it up, click “Next” when you’re done. On the next page, make sure that the “Allow the connection” option is enabled and then click “Next.”The next page allows you some control over when the rule is active. If you want the rule to apply no matter what type of network it’s connected to, leave the options at their default and just click “Next.” However, if your PC is not part of a business (and doesn’t connect to a domain), or if you prefer it not respond to ping requests when it’s connected to a public network, feel free to disable those options. Finally, you need to give your new rule a name, and optionally a description. However, we do recommend that you at least get the text “ICMPv. ICMPv. 6 requests. Choose whatever makes sense to you and then click “Finish.”Unfortunately, you’re not quite done yet. It’s a good idea to go ahead and create a second rule that allows incoming ICMPv. Mostly, it’s a good just- in- case measure. People tend to use IPv. IPv. 6. Might as well have your bases covered. Follow the same steps we just went over and set all the options exactly the same as we did for the ICMPv. However, when you get to the ports and protocols page, select “ICMPv. ICMPv. 4.” That—and creating a different name for the rule—are the only two things that change. When you have the two new rules in place, you can close the “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” app. No need to restart your PC or anything. Your PC should immediately begin responding to pings. If you ever want to disable all this, you could go back and delete those two rules. However, you might be better off just disabling the rules instead. That way, you can re- enable them without recreating them. In the “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” app, select “Inbound Rules” on the left, and locate the rules you made in the middle pane. Right- click a rule and choose “Disable” to prevent ping requests from passing through the firewall. Allowing ping requests to reach your PC is not something everyone will need to do. But, if you’re doing any kind of network troubleshooting, ping can be a valuable tool. It’s also pretty easy to turn on and off once you have things set up. Disable Security Center notifications in Windows 1. The Security Center in the Windows operating system runs a service in the background to keep a constant check on the security state of your computer. If it finds that the Windows Firewall, any Anti. Are you having problems connecting, or keeping a connection, with your wireless router? Are you seeing poor signal strength with one or two bars, like you see below? Before you throw the laptop out the window or give up on Wi- Fi altogether and resort to an old- fashioned wire connection, keep on reading. I’ll help you discover seven ways to extend the range of your wireless router. Chances are that at least one of them will work for you. Soon you’ll be able to browse the net and check Facebook from your favorite spot in the home, without worrying about getting disconnected. If you’re a performance hog, or enjoy streaming shows from Hulu or online gaming, you might also see an improvement when near the edge of your Wi- Fi coverage. Before you fix the problem, you might want to know why you’re here in the first place. Well, there are numerous causes for poor wireless range. If you’re lucky, it’s simply because you have a large home. Newer wireless N routers can give you up to a few hundred feet of range. However, the reach of the signals vary greatly upon the inter- makeup of the building. Plaster walls, for example, slow the signal down more than plain drywall. So, even if you don’t have your mansion yet, your stock wireless router might not even cover your rental or starter home. Find the Sweet Spot for the Router. Before you throw money at the problem, you should first check that your wireless router is placed in the right spot. Remember, the router is sending the Wi- Fi signal in all directions equally, more or less. The illustration below shows an example of how a router placed in the corner of the home might not provide whole- house coverage. Therefore, putting the router as close as possible in the center of your desired coverage area (think vertically and horizontally) will usually give you the best range, as depicted in the next illustration. So you need to consider the locations of cable or telephone outlets; cable if you have a cable Internet connection and telephone if you have DSL Internet. This will limit where you can place the router. If it looks like there is a better spot for the router where you can also hook up the Internet modem, go ahead and try it. Then see if it fixes your connection problems. If not, you can try the other techniques that follow. Create a Virtual Access Point. A new feature that debuted in Windows 7 lets you create what Microsoft calls a Wireless Hosted Network. It essentially makes your wireless adapter a virtual wireless router, even when you’re connected to another wireless network. Other Wi- Fi users can connect to the virtual router. Extending a outdoor wireless signal with a WiFi range extender needs to be done in areas with a poor signal. Every outdoor wireless environment will be different. They’ll get Internet access through the host’s connection. This can be a temporary or permanent solution to get the Wi- Fi signal extended to a computer outside the router’s coverage area. If you have a Windows PC or laptop that gets a good connection to the router, and it’s in between your router and the computer that’s having problems connecting, you can use the Wireless Hosted Network as a “repeater.” This isn’t the best solution, though, if you want full performance on that faraway computer. The illustration bellows depicts this technique. On the Windows machine, connect to your regular wireless network. Then you can use a utility like Connectify (screen shot below) to create the virtual router, instead of using the Command Prompt. Now, on the computer or device that was having connection problems, connect to the virtual router instead of the real router. Upgrade Your Wireless Router. Like most other technologies, Wi- Fi keeps improving. Wi- Fi products have, over time, gotten faster and reach further. They are based on a standard developed by the IEEE (an engineering consortium). The first major standard was 8. Then 8. 02. 1. 1g was released, increasing the speed and range. Now we have 8. 02. Like you may see elsewhere, we’ll drop the funny number for the standard and just call them wireless B, wireless G, and so on. The point here is that if you’re still using wireless B or G, you should think about upgrading to wireless N. As the photo below shows, most wireless N routers have three antennas. Upgrading just might increase the range of your wireless router enough to get that problem computer connected. Areas where you currently get spotty coverage, for instance, should get a good connection after upgrading. If you aren’t sure which wireless standard you’re sporting, take a look at the router. It should give you some type of clue. If you’re unsure, get the model number and search for it online to find the product details. For optimum range and performance, you want both the router and the wireless adapter on the computer to be wireless N. You’ll typically have to lay down $5. You can pick a “normal” router, which is what you’ll find on most shelves and sites. But for even more range, there are “special” routers that come with features like hi- gain antennas that boost coverage. Editor's Note: Here is a link to our favorite wireless AC routers, the latest Wi- Fi standard. Slap on a Better Antenna. Not all antennas are created equal. Wi- Fi vendors almost always slap on the cheaper antennas. But you can buy antennas that are enhanced, generally giving you better range and performance. Replacing the antenna(s) on your router can give you better overall coverage. Replacing the antenna(s) on the wireless adapter will give you better range for that particular computer. Keep in mind when shopping, the higher the gain (measured in d. Bi), generally means the further it will transmit and receive. However, the higher the gain also means the more directional the antenna. For the router you’ll probably want to stick with a non- directional antenna that sends and receives in all directions, which they call omni- directional. For wireless adapters, you could consider a directional antenna though. You’ll just have to make sure it points toward your wireless router. First, check the vendor website of the router or adapter you want to upgrade. See if they offer replacement antennas for your particular model. For example, D- Link offers the Xtreme N 2. GHz Antenna (ANT2. It works with both the desktop adapters and routers of their Xtreme N and Range. Booster N product lines. There are also numerous companies that offer universal antennas. If you’re using wireless N, make sure the antenna supports it. You’ll probably want to find a wireless adapter that comes with the high gain antenna, as opposed to purchasing just an antenna that connects to your current adapter. If you do look at lone antennas, make sure you get one that has the same connectors as your adapter or router. Upgrading your router’s antenna(s) shouldn’t require any tools. They should screw off by hand fairly easy. If not, they probably aren’t detachable or replaceable. Then you should be able to screw on the new antenna(s). Make sure they screw on tight and point them up. Upgrading your laptop usually means you’ve bought a new wireless adapter with a better antenna(s), rather than just the antennas. If this is the case, simply plug it into the USB or PC card port. Upgrading a desktop PC is usually easy, too. If you purchased just an antenna or a set of antennas, screw the old ones off and put the new ones on. USB adapters are easier; you’d just have to plug them into a port. If you’re looking for a directional antenna for a computer, consider Hawking Technology’s Hi- Gain Wireless- 1. N USB Dish Adapter for around $6. July. If you have a Mac. Book or an Apple desktop, check out the new Bear. Extender n. 3 for about $4. If you’re still using wireless B or G, look into the Wi- Fire directional antenna and adapter for $4. Use a Wi- Fi Repeater. Another way to extend your Wi- Fi signal is to use a repeater. The idea is along the same lines as creating a virtual access point with Windows, which we discussed earlier. You can buy a wireless repeater and place it in- between your wireless router and the computer having problems connecting. The problem computer can connect wirelessly to the repeater, and the repeater connects wirelessly to the router. Keep in mind that this isn’t the best approach, performance- wise. The throughput or speeds for connections between computers on the router and repeater are cut almost in half. This isn’t a big deal if you just browse the web. But it can be noticeable if you do network or online gaming, download large files, or if you transfer files between computers. However, it may mean the difference between getting some signal on a computer with a repeater, and getting no signal without one. When shopping around for a repeater, you’ll find most vendors call them range expanders or extenders. If you are the DIY type, consider the free DD- WRT software that you can load onto supported routers to get repeating and numerous other cool features for free. Editor's Note: Here are our favorite Wi- Fi extenders. Use Powerline Networking. Wi- Fi isn’t the only un- wired type of network for a home. There’s also powerline networking, standardized by the Home. Plug Powerline Alliance. This technology makes it possible to transfer data across your home’s electrical system. You can potentially make any electrical outlet a network port or additional wireless access point (such as depicted in the illustration below). Extending your network with powerline adapters generally provides better speeds and performance than using a wireless repeater as we previously discussed. However, performance varies depending upon the condition of your electric lines, the other electrical devices plugged into the home, and the powerline adapters you use. Nevertheless, this approach might be good if you don’t want to run wires around the house, like we’ll discuss next. You might look at the 2. Mbps Powerline AV Adapter Kit (TPL- 3. E2. K) from TRENDnet for about $9. Plus check out the new Powerline AV 2. Wireless- N Extender Kit (XAVNB2. Netgear. Zy. XEL offers a 2. Mbps Powerline Home. Plug AV 8. 02. 1. On Windows 7, Google Chrome easily beat Firefox, IE 1. Opera as the best replacement web broser for IE 8, 9, or 1. Don't do this! Instead consider one of the following browsers: Chrome 4. Firefox 4. 3, IE 1. Opera 3. 4. To see how they worked I ran benchmarks on a fully updated Windows 7 Gateway SX2. PC. This older computer uses a dual- core 2. You can do that in two ways: Download the installer from Microsoft- -be wary of getting it from third- party websites- -- and simply install it. Or, you can simply update your system. Either way works perfectly well whether you're moving from IE 8, 9 or 1. While IE 1. 1 is excellent on Windows 1. It doesn't perform that well on Windows 7. There are several reasons why Microsoft is so insistent that you upgrade to Windows 1. This is one of them. Edge, the Windows 1. IE 1. 0 simply run better on the same hardware with Windows 1. Mozilla, Firefox's parent organization, created Kraken With this benchmark, the lower the score, the better the result. Here, Chrome romps to victory with a score of 2,4. Firefox takes second, 2,8. Opera comes in third, 2. IE finished a dismal last with 2. Octane 2. 0: Google's contribution to Java. Script testing, also includes scenario testing for today's highly interactive web applications. Octane is not Chrome specific. For example, it tests how fast Microsoft's Type. Script compiles itself. In this benchmark, the higher the score, the better. Chrome, with a score of 1. HTML5 Test: Finally, I checked to see how well each browser complies with today's most up to date and universal web standard: HTML 5. It just shows how close each browser comes to being in sync with the HTML 5 standard. A perfect score, which no one got, would have been 5. Chrome, 5. 01, barely edged out Opera, 5. Firefox took third with 4. And, once more eating the dust of the others, came IE with 3. The numbers make it obvious. When you replace IE 8, 9 or 1. Windows 7, Chrome is easily the best choice. Opera, which has become the forgotten browser, also deserves some attention. Firefox, which has had more than its fair share of troubles, doesn't appear to be a good choice. And, IE 1. 1 on Windows 7 just doesn't cut the mustard. Of course, as Microsoft would be the first to tell you, if you upgraded your entire system to Windows 1. But, if like many people, all you want to do is to upgrade your browser and not your operating system, Chrome is your best choice. Fry Fire District . It is used to develop computer programs for Microsoft Windows, as well as web sites, web apps, web services and mobile apps. Visual Studio uses Microsoft software development platforms such as Windows API, Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Store and Microsoft Silverlight. It can produce both native code and managed code. Visual Studio includes a code editor supporting Intelli. Sense (the code completion component) as well as code refactoring. The integrated debugger works both as a source- level debugger and a machine- level debugger. Other built- in tools include a code profiler, forms designer for building GUI applications, web designer, class designer, and database schema designer. It accepts plug- ins that enhance the functionality at almost every level—including adding support for source control systems (like Subversion) and adding new toolsets like editors and visual designers for domain- specific languages or toolsets for other aspects of the software development lifecycle (like the Team Foundation Server client: Team Explorer). Visual Studio supports 3. Built- in languages include C. Support for other languages such as Python. It also supports XML/XSLT, HTML/XHTML, Java. Script and CSS. Java (and J#) were supported in the past. Microsoft provides a free version of Visual Studio called the Community edition that supports plugins and is available at no cost. Architecture. When installed, the functionality is available as a Service. The IDE provides three services: SVs. Solution, which provides the ability to enumerate projects and solutions; SVs. UIShell, which provides windowing and UI functionality (including tabs, toolbars and tool windows); and SVs. Shell, which deals with registration of VSPackages. In addition, the IDE is also responsible for coordinating and enabling communication between services. Visual Studio uses COM to access the VSPackages. The Visual Studio SDK also includes the Managed Package Framework (MPF), which is a set of managed wrappers around the COM- interfaces that allow the Packages to be written in any CLI compliant language. A language service defines various interfaces which the VSPackage implementation can implement to add support for various functionalities. Language services are implemented on a per- language basis. The implementations can reuse code from the parser or the compiler for the language. For native code, either the native COM interfaces or the Babel Framework (part of Visual Studio SDK) can be used. In contrast, a source control plugin using the MSSCCI (Microsoft Source Code Control Interface) provides a set of functions that are used to implement various source control functionality, with a standard Visual Studio user interface. Visual Studio . NET 2. MSSCCI 1. 1, and Visual Studio . NET 2. 00. 3 used MSSCCI 1. Visual Studio 2. 00. MSSCCI Version 1. The instances use different registry hives (see MSDN's definition of the term . The instances are launched by an App. Id- specific . exe that selects the App. Id, sets the root hive and launches the IDE. VSPackages registered for one App. Id are integrated with other VSPackages for that App. Id. The various product editions of Visual Studio are created using the different App. Ids. The Visual Studio Express edition products are installed with their own App. Ids, but the Standard, Professional and Team Suite products share the same App. Id. Consequently, one can install the Express editions side- by- side with other editions, unlike the other editions which update the same installation. The professional edition includes a superset of the VSPackages in the standard edition and the team suite includes a superset of the VSPackages in both other editions. The App. Id system is leveraged by the Visual Studio Shell in Visual Studio 2. In Visual Studio 2. Other navigational aids include collapsing code blocks and incremental search, in addition to normal text search and regex search. A management tool for code snippets is built in as well. These tools are surfaced as floating windows which can be set to automatically hide when unused or docked to the side of the screen. The Visual Studio code editor also supports code refactoring including parameter reordering, variable and method renaming, interface extraction and encapsulation of class members inside properties, among others. Visual Studio features background compilation (also called incremental compilation). Warnings are marked with a green underline. Background compilation does not generate executable code, since it requires a different compiler than the one used to generate executable code. It works with both managed code as well as native code and can be used for debugging applications written in any language supported by Visual Studio. In addition, it can also attach to running processes and monitor and debug those processes. If source code is not available, it can show the disassembly. The Visual Studio debugger can also create memory dumps as well as load them later for debugging. The debugger can be configured to be launched when an application running outside the Visual Studio environment crashes. The debugger allows setting breakpoints (which allow execution to be stopped temporarily at a certain position) and watches (which monitor the values of variables as the execution progresses). Code can be stepped over, i. When debugging, if the mouse pointer hovers over any variable, its current value is displayed in a tooltip (. During coding, the Visual Studio debugger lets certain functions be invoked manually from the Immediate tool window. The parameters to the method are supplied at the Immediate window. These tools include: Windows Forms Designer. The Windows Forms designer is used to build GUI applications using Windows Forms. Layout can be controlled by housing the controls inside other containers or locking them to the side of the form. Controls that display data (like textbox, list box and grid view) can be bound to data sources like databases or queries. Data- bound controls can be created by dragging items from the Data Sources window onto a design surface. The designer generates either C# or VB. NET code for the application. WPF Designer. The WPF designer, codenamed Cider. Like the Windows Forms designer it supports the drag and drop metaphor. It is used to author user interfaces targeting Windows Presentation Foundation. It supports all WPF functionality including data binding and automatic layout management. It generates XAML code for the UI. The generated XAML file is compatible with Microsoft Expression Design, the designer- oriented product. The XAML code is linked with code using a code- behind model. Web designer/development. Visual Studio also includes a web- site editor and designer that allows web pages to be authored by dragging and dropping widgets. It is used for developing ASP. NET applications and supports HTML, CSS and Java. Script. It uses a code- behind model to link with ASP. NET code. From Visual Studio 2. Microsoft Expression Web. There is also ASP. NET MVC support for MVC technology as a separate download. The Class Designer can generate C# and VB. NET code outlines for the classes and methods. It can also generate class diagrams from hand- written classes. Data designer. The data designer can be used to graphically edit database schemas, including typed tables, primary and foreign keys and constraints. It can also be used to design queries from the graphical view. Mapping designer. From Visual Studio 2. LINQ to SQL to design the mapping between database schemas and the classes that encapsulate the data. The new solution from ORM approach, ADO. NET Entity Framework, replaces and improves the old technology. Other tools. It is invoked using CTRL+TAB. Properties Editor. The Properties Editor tool is used to edit properties in a GUI pane inside Visual Studio. It lists all available properties (both read- only and those which can be set) for all objects including classes, forms, web pages and other items. Object Browser. The Object Browser is a namespace and class library browser for Microsoft . NET. It can be used to browse the namespaces (which are arranged hierarchically) in managedassemblies. The hierarchy may or may not reflect the organization in the file system. Solution Explorer. In Visual Studio parlance, a solution is a set of code files and other resources that are used to build an application. The files in a solution are arranged hierarchically, which might or might not reflect the organization in the file system. The Solution Explorer is used to manage and browse the files in a solution. Team Explorer. Team Explorer is used to integrate the capabilities of Team Foundation Server, the Revision Control System into the IDE (and the basis for Microsoft's Code. Plex hosting environment for open source projects). In addition to source control it provides the ability to view and manage individual work items (including bugs, tasks and other documents) and to browse TFS statistics. It is included as part of a TFS install and is also available as a download for Visual Studio separately. It allows creation and alteration of database tables (either by issuing T- SQL commands or by using the Data designer). It can also be used to create queries and stored procedures, with the latter in either T- SQL or in managed code via SQL CLR. Debugging and Intelli. Sense support is available as well. Server Explorer. The Server Explorer tool is used to manage database connections on an accessible computer. It is also used to browse running Windows Services, performance counters, Windows Event Log and message queues and use them as a datasource. Dotfuscator works with all flavors of . NET including ASP.
